ForMin Melescanu: Our community in Hungary faces real survival issues

Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu declared that in Hungary there is a community of Romanians who are facing very real survival problems, some regarding schools' functioning or the existence of a Romanian newspaper.
These problems were introduced to the Head of the Romanian diplomacy during a meeting he had on Monday in Budapest with representatives of this community.

"We have a relatively small community concentrated mostly on the eastern border of Hungary and western Romania, facing very real survival problems, of a Romanian community who was rather developed during certain periods. From their point of view, the main concern is to get a more substantial support from the Hungarian authorities, just as the Hungarian community in Romania receives support from the Government and financing. They have many problems related to the functioning of schools, of the Romanians Association in Hungary and also in relation to the printing of media, a newspaper which is published here. (...) I would like a more genuine support from the authorities in Budapest for the  preservation and development of national identity,' declared Teodor Melescanu in a press conference.

The Foreign Affairs Minister added that the Romanians in Hungary were interested in how the Romanian state supports the community, one of the direct proposals made during discussions being linked to the need of a more important cultural presence of Romania in Hungary.

"From what the people here told me, I understood that there are two main lines of action. One is to organize more cultural activities with people who come from Romania, artists or writers or cultural personalities that might come among them and bring them an added value that they cannot necessarily find only here in Hungary, and secondly, they greatly want the other way round, for some of the activities they carry out here, in the cultural and artistic domain, to be known in Romania as well. (...) People are very realistic, they do not have visions that could be in conflict with the Hungarian state, on the contrary, they are loyal citizens of the Hungarian state and their only concern is to ensure their cultural, spiritual and religious identity,' added Melescanu.

He specified that there were requests for financial support from the Romanian Government for the Orthodox chapel in Gojdu establishment and for setting up spaces where they can carry on various activities, such as learning the Romanian language, Romanian history.

"It's a small community facing problems, but at the same time, there is a great deal of enthusiasm from an important part of this community to find the best ways for promoting and preserving Romanians' cultural and spiritual identity   in Hungary,' asserted the Romanian diplomat.

At the 2011 census, 26,345 people in Hungary declared they are of Romanian origin, 13,886 declared Romanian language as their mother tongue and 17,983 said they use the Romanian language as a communication tool.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Teodor Melescanu, conducted on Monday an official visit to Budapest at the invitation of the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Péter Szíjjártó, this visit being among the first foreign trips since taking over the current mandate as head of the Romanian diplomacy. The agenda included consultations with the Head of the Hungarian diplomacy, a meeting with the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, and  addressing the audience, a first for a Romanian minister, at the annual meeting of the Hungarian diplomacy. At the same time, the Romanian Minister's schedule included a meeting with representatives of the Romanian community in Hungary.
