Minister Delegate for European Affairs Ana Birchall, also acting justice minister on Friday reconfirmed Romania's commitment to support the United Nations Organisation and stressed the importance to continue and develop successful projects in various fields, such as child protection and combatting domestic violence, at a meeting with Sandie Blanchet, interim coordinating resident of the UN system in Romania and representative of the UNICEF in Bucharest, the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) says in a press statement.

On this occasion, Birchall evoked the coming into force of the Istanbul Convention preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

"This is a project very dear to me that we have developed together and I'd like to thank you once again for the support given to achieving it,' Birchall is quoted as saying.

The Romanian official mentioned the prospects for future collaboration between Romania and the UN system, with emphasis on furthering Romania's Country Programme for 2018 - 2022.  Birchall said it is 'necessary for the most efficient ways to be identified that will allow Romania to provide assistance , so we could ensure that our projects will have a maximum impact on the beneficiary countries."

The officials also agreed to start several events in the period immediately ahead to continue throughout the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019.

Birchall also expressed Romania's availability to share experience gained in the process of democratic, economic and social transition with countries undergoing similar developments.

She underscored that Romania holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union will place the country at the forefront in Europe and the world by offering it the chance to bring to attention highly topical issues, including child protection and domestic violence, reads the MAE release.

The UNICEF official in her turn appreciated Romania's collaboration with the UN, both in the country and within UNICEF, through Romania's participation in various UN structures.
