Melescanu takes over as Foreign Minister

Teodor Melescanu assumed on Thursday the mandate of Minister of Foreign Affairs, occasion on which he had discussions with former Minister Lazar Comanescu on topics like consolidation of Romania's profile in the European Union and NATO, and continuing the reform and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lazar Comanescu has presented in short to the new Minister the most relevant actions and measures of Romanian diplomacy within the period November 2015 - January 2017, and has informed his successor regarding the current matters, ongoing projects, and the daily diplomatic agenda of the Ministry, informs a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

The two have discussed, furthermore, the main directions and priorities of foreign policy in the following period and significant importance of continuing these in promoting the national interests. They have agreed that the major objectives of the foreign policy remain the consolidation of Romania's profile in the EU and NATO, further development of the Strategic Partnership with the USA, of the special relation with the Republic of Moldova and strategic approach towards the whole neighborhood of Romania, shows the quoted source.

Other topics discussed regarded the opportunities open in the last period in the economic diplomacy, continuing the reform and MAE's professionalization, and the operationalization of the Agency for International Cooperation and Development.
